Is the New ‘Superman’ Movie Too ‘Woke’? Conservatives Think So
Before it hit theaters, the “Superman” movie was sparking outrage among conservatives.
Right-wing commentators criticized the film as pushing a “woke” agenda based on comments from director James Gunn.
In an interview, Gunn described the movie as “about politics” and an immigrant story, highlighting Superman’s roots as an outsider who embodies universal morality and basic human kindness.
Critics opine that the movie's messages mark a sharp turn from Superman's traditional American values, pointing to Gunn's emphasis on the hero's immigrant identity and the film's global message.
“I mean, Superman is the story of America,” Gunn told The Times of London last week. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country. But for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”
